"We are absolutely delighted with all three pianos. The Grand is a most refined and responsive instrument - just what we wanted - and I have to say that the reconditioned 1984 U3A upright is superior to many of the brand new uprights we have purchased recently. Thank you very much again for your invaluable help and advice, and for having dealt with all of this so quickly and so efficiently."
When I discuss my piano requirements with Jeff I can be confident that I am getting excellent advice. He has answered my many queries promptly, courteously and with infinite patience. Jeff has voiced and serviced the Yamaha C7 piano in our school hall and every recitalist who has performed on it has commented on its beautiful tone and responsive touch. He has also worked on two of my own pianos and I have absolute faith in his ability to coax the very best out of an instrument. I've recommended him to other pianists and they have also been delighted by the quality of his work. It has been a pleasure to deal with Jeff and I recommend him wholeheartedly.
The process in selecting and purchasing our 1998 Steinway B Grand was absolutely faultless. With a long distance to travel and impossibly difficult diary Jeff went to great lengths to make things work for us. The process of selecting the piano, was exactly that, a selection and not a sales pitch. Advice is offered at every stage of the process but we never felt like we were being pushed or steered to a particular piano. This was a unique experience in my opinion.
Speed of delivery and the care taken was again first rate. It also speaks volumes when, on a visit to Steinway Hall, I couldn't find another B Grand which I preferred over our own.
As a teacher I recommend that Shackell Pianos is the first choice for any student wishing to purchase a piano. A budget piano will receive the same level of preparation as the most expensive, the added value of this cannot be measured.
My Hoffman T177 is excellent and as I hoped. Shackell Pianos sales and pre-delivery service was really excellent.
I purchased my first piano from Jeffrey some 10 years ago and was thoroughly impressed with his knowledge, patience and advice. Although I made several lengthy visits to his workshops to try out various pianos he was always welcoming, never forceful in trying to sell me an instrument and always encouraged me to take time to make my own decision. A year or so ago I decided to upgrade the original new C3 Yamaha I purchased in 2002 and without hesitation returned to Jeffrey for advice. He listened carefully to my aspirations and we discussed some alternatives, once again proving without question why he is so highly respected in the business. Over the next few months he kept in touch with possible pianos I might like to view and play and within a short space of time he had sourced the ideal instrument, offering an unbeatable part exchange deal. Should I get the opportunity to upgrade again I would certainly not look to take my business anywhere other than back to Jeffrey, a very personable, honest and knowledgeable businessman, a very rare combination of qualities these days.
Dear Jeff,I just wanted to write to say how thrilled I am with what you have done with my Steinway. I was completely overwhelmed with the wonderful tone and touch at first,
which is why I didn't play much, but I couldn't leave it alone once I'd recovered.
Thank you so much - for coming all this way and spending all that time, and for doing such a sensational job.
"Although Schimmel pianos were not normally part of Shackell Pianos Ltd. range, they rapidly carried out research in order to give me a reasonable estimate of my Schimmel's value. Once I had decided to sell through them, Mr Shackell speedily arranged for the piano to be collected and transported to the their showrooms. It was on sale the following morning with photographs and an excellent recommendation appearing on their website. Despite the fact that Schimmel sales can be unpredictable, the piano was sold within a week for the full asking price. Within a few days the proceeds were in my bank account. Overall I would describe the service I received as first class."
I really appreciate your advice and the warning you gave but following Paul's report I was happy to accept that the piano was actually as advertised, so I purchased it and it now has pride of place in my sitting room. Furthermore, it's extremely encouraging to know that people like you still exist; who stride to ensure that a level of integrity exists in your particular field, regardless of whether or not you profit personally.
Once again, very many thanks for your help and advice.
After 2.5 hours playing various pianos, discussing and pondering, I was consistently drawn to the Hoffmann, the tone (to me) sounded beautiful, very rich. Jeff was exceptionally helpful and informative and it was a pleasure doing business with him.
Shackell Pianos were asked to totally refurbish our 1971 Steinway model D which had been somewhat neglected over the years. The professionalism of Mr Shackell was evident from day one. Nothing was left to chance and the communication throughout the process including asking us about specific details such as reinstating the Steinway logo was superb. With such a valuable asset out of sight it was extremely reassuring that we knew at every stage of the process where parts of the piano were and what the schedule of works included. The attention to detail, passion and care Shackell Pianos afforded our piano could not be bettered. The piano now sits as the jewel in the crown of our brand new building and its beautiful sound enchants all that listen to her. The piano has been transformed from a battered, dull and dusty occasionally played instrument to a cultural icon of splendour to be enjoyed by all. I cannot commend Shackell Piano's highly enough.
"When putting the feelers out and researching for my upcoming piano purchase I ended up chatting with Jeff a couple of times on the phone about various pianos he had in stock. It was clear that this was a chap who is passionate about what he does and enjoys talking about it. Each time he was friendly and informative and talked to me at length without any particular attempt to convince me to come and try his stock. Similarly, when I did do just that, I was left to play the pianos I was interested in without any pressure at all. In the end I purchased a W.Hoffmann T186 grand for a very nice price and with which I am very happy. In all it was a pleasant and smooth buying experience and I would definitely look to return to Shackell Pianos should I ever wish to upgrade."
"The frank and honest advice we were given was much appreciated, my wife and I are no experts (the piano was a birthday present for our daughter). The piano (Yamaha C3) represented a significant investment and I am delighted to report it has lived up to all our expectations. It arrived smack on time, on the morning of our daughter's birthday.
I have no hesitation in recommending Shackell Pianos, the personal service and desire to ensure the best possible outcome would be hard to beat."
I really enjoyed coming to the showroom and being allowed to play without interruption to form a view between the Yamaha and Kawai, playing the latter was only a second thought for comparison, but to me seemed to have something which the Yamaha did not, but then the choice of instrument is very personal. Certainly your premises offer the best playing experience.
Your movers delivered on time. And now what is evident is the time you took to prepare the piano, so thank you for that. The volume is just right for the room, which is much appreciated.
The new W. Hoffmann V112 suits my needs. I am delighted with it in particular the volume and tone is excellent from a relatively small upright.
This is what makes spending that extra bit worthwhile. From an engineers point of view the build quality looks great!
You were the first piano company I visited in my search for a piano and I came back and bought one from you. Why?
Everyone I spoke to who wanted to sell me a piano told me something different and I became really confused. So I came back to you because I felt you were less of a salesman and more of a technician with an obvious passion for your trade. I felt the advice you gave me was honest and accurate and coupled with enthusiasm I would not hesitate to recommend your company to my friends. Thank to you and the installers for great service and advice.
My piano (Steinway) is settled in her new home and we are absolutely delighted with the entire process: from your courteous, sensitive and informed support during my project in discovering the right piano for us, your prompt response to my many emails and the two 'movers' whose professionalism was the icing on the cake. The tone on the piano is beautiful and all that I had hoped for.
In our quest for a grand piano we had trawled a number of showrooms in Oxford and Cambridge before contacting Jeff. Even though I phoned at a weekend, Jeff was extremely helpful, listened carefully and suggested two particular pianos for me to try. The 1912 Bechstein we now own is a special instrument in near original condition. Jeff has provided the most excellent service and has been patiently advising us on care and maintenance, even taking the trouble to travel to Cambridge on a Sunday morning. Not only is he the most able piano expert I have encountered, he is also the most personable and kind. I am adding this testimonial as an acknowledgement of his skill and professionalism; thank you to Jeff and his team.
I just want to say how grateful I am for all Jeff's help in fulfilling a lifelong dream to own a Steinway. As my budget was limited I wasn't sure that it would be possible, but he took the time to find out what I needed, talked through the various restoration options, and in due course found just the right piano for me. Having tried some pianos out when they'd just arrived at the workshop, and then played them after Jeff had worked on them, the transformation was amazing. All of his pianos play beautifully and their individual character shines through. Jeff went beyond the call of duty to make the whole process of buying a piano a thoroughly enjoyable experience - no sales pitch, just good honest advice, time and space to try them out, and a mean cup of tea!
It is rare to meet a true craftsman these days. We feel privileged to know you and thank you for all your help and support.
It will take some time to understand and enjoy fully the instrument, but we can guarantee that the piano (Steinway) is going to be cherished.
Thank you again, Best wishes
It is certainly high time for me to put pen to paper - or finger to keyboard - and send you my sincere thanks for the Steinway model 'A' which now graces my music room. I play it for hours each day. It is utterly superb, Jeff, and I have not yet got over the amazement I feel every time that I play upon it. It seems to be everything that I hoped for and more. Thanks to you many times over Jeff for all that you have done, may you and your business flourish.
Owning a Steinway grand piano has been my lifetime's ambition. Recently, I have been in a position to be able to achieve my dream. A friend who had been extremely pleased with the service and the piano he had received from Shackell Pianos suggested I visit their website. I immediately saw a Model A piano, which was exactly what I was looking for in all respects. I went over to Witney and could play the piano to my heart's content, and compare it with all the other pianos in the showroom as well, which was very interesting and helpful.
I went back a couple of weeks later, on a Sunday morning, and was able once again to play for as long as I wanted to. I did buy this wonderful piano, and I absolutely love it. It means so much to me to have achieved my dream. The excellent service, coupled with Jeffrey's knowledge and expertise, has been of enormous benefit, and also being able to contact Jeffrey since with questions regarding the ideal conditions and tuning of the piano, especially in the extreme weather conditions we've been having since I bought it in October, has been absolutely wonderful.
I would have no hesitation recommending Shackell Pianos!
I recently purchased a 1979 Yamaha C3 from Shackell Pianos, and couldn't be happier with the instrument, or the experience of buying it. Jeff was of course hugely knowledgeable about pianos, and ready to help with whatever queries I might have; but also very happy simply to let me have time to myself to try whichever instruments I wanted in the showroom. The pricing was extremely reasonable, and the delivery service prompt, efficient and friendly.
I play the piano professionally, so need to have an instrument I can rely upon - both in terms of simple quality of tone and action, and in terms of being able to withstand heavy daily use. I certainly feel that I now have this (and, incidentally, the piano arrived beautifully regulated and tuned). I should also point out that although I went 'shopping' with a fairly clear idea of the type of piano I wanted, I did also play a great number of instruments in the showroom, both above and below my price ranges; and can vouch that everything I played was, without exception, beautiful cared for and set up.
The Steinway model K upright that Jeffrey Shackell found for our daughter has completely surpassed all our wishes for a piano and has quickly become a much loved member of the family. It sounds gorgeous and looks fabulous too. My husband is a cabinetmaker so it looks very much at home amongst the furniture that we live with. The crown cut mahogany changes colour throughout the day & at sundown glows a spectacular red!
Jeffrey understood completely that my mobility is limited and a journey to his showroom would have been difficult. He very kindly sent us a series of photos of the instrument with lots of interesting notes, enabling us to go ahead with the purchase in complete confidence. He even offered to take the instrument back if we were not happy. Jeffrey was outstanding. We are truly grateful for Jeffrey's very honest advice and professional service.
For many years we struggled on with a family heirloom that was coming to the end of it's useful life. We finally came to a decision and bought a second-hand Kemble Conservatoire from Jeffrey. It is a beautiful instrument and it sounds amazing - the whole family enjoy playing so much more now! I can't believe we waited so long. We were very happy with the advice and service provided by Shackell Pianos, and with the price.
I have been searching long and hard for a nice little grand piano nationally and internationally and was extremely delighted to have found Jeffrey Shackell. He is a man of utmost integrity and courtesy, he is to the point and a great pleasure to interact with. He sensed our needs with an acute ear (even though dillentants like myself cannot articulate these expertly), establishes a profile and carefully tuned the piano to meet these needs. He is obsessed with precision and getting things not just right but perfect, a rare trait these days that deserves deepest respect. I am now most grateful for the opportunity to own a fantastic Steinway M and do my share in taking care of it for us and the next generations to come.
Thank you again, Jeffrey!
Thank you for your amazing and quality work with the Steinway model A, I am thrilled with it and cannot wait to get stuck in.
I just wanted to write to let you know how number 435199 is settling in at the Under School!
We're delighted with it already and I am sure that it will become even more enjoyable to play and to hear, the more it is played.
Thank you so much for the excellent work you have done to make this such a wonderful instrument again.
With very best wishes,
Malvern Concert Club has been hiring Steinway D grand pianos from Jeffrey Shackell for many years, and is delighted to recommend them to all discerning music-lovers. Every possible care is taken in the transportation and tuning of the instruments, and this is an integral part, on which we know we can rely, of the very high quality of our recitals.

I had been searching over hill and dale for a couple of years before I eventually found my piano with Jeffrey Shackell. I spoke to him at length several times over a number of weeks discussing what I was after and I genuinely felt that he built up a sympathetic and accurate picture of my "ideal" piano. And so I was excited when he rang me about two possibilities for me to try. One of them was nearly perfect and further to a conversation about the pros and cons of restringing a piano of this age I decided to go ahead with the work. At all times, I felt my best interests were absolutely at the centre of the purchase of the piano and if I had to sum up the entire experience with one word it would be "respect". I felt my input was respected, I respected the advice I was given by Jeff and above all, we both respected the wonderful instrument that is a Steinway piano! I took delivery of my Steinway model M a couple of weeks ago and am absolutely thrilled with it.
Thanks for all your magnificent work over the last seasons. Your pianos are always superb and your work unique.
The piano (Yamaha C3) is amazing! It's getting very good use, definitely my best investment ever!
